Daniel Arsham joins Mattel Creations to design and release eight drops of 1:64 die-cast, Silkstone, and crystallized eroded versions of Hot Wheels, including the famous Rodger Dodger and a Porsche 930 Turbo. Titled ‘Laps,’ the first batch of the limited-edition toy car series will be debuted at a public event in New York City on October 21st and 22nd and on Mattel Creations starting on October 27th. Details on the three additional Laps will be announced soon. The collaboration between Arsham Studio and the Mattel Creations design team will last for two years as the duo produces famous supercars in Hot Wheels versions.

For Lap One, Daniel Arsham draws his inspiration from the history of Rodger Dodger. As a frequent Porsche collaborator and enthusiast, it was natural for the artist to look into a modified 1973 Dodge Charger SE with a blown V8 engine emerging from the hood and settle with the Porsche 930 Turbo as his second Hot Wheels car. The crystallized eroded version of the Porsche 930 Turbo Hot Wheels includes an Eroded Super Rally Case in the shape of a wheel and tire, which is a direct reference to the original Hot Wheels Rally Case from 1968. Opening the case, the Eroded Super Rally Case features eight dedicated slots for the toy cars.

Daniel Arsham’s repertoire tends to rely on his penchant for experimenting with materials. Teaming up with Mattel Creations for Hot Wheels is no different as the design teams peer through Mattel’s portfolio and land on Silkstone, a modern composite with a porcelain appearance utilized in some premium Barbie dolls. The selection marks the first use of this material in the manufacturing of 1:64-scale cars.

‘Mattel Creations developed creative ways to deliver my vision by thinking outside of the box and experimenting with new materials and processes,’ says Daniel Arsham. This is the first time Silkstone has been used on a Hot Wheels model, and my first time working with this material, making it a historic moment for both of us. The Mattel Creations and Daniel Arsham Hot Wheels collection will also feature a selection of accessories, including keychains, stickers, and a limited collection of prints. These will be available starting October 27th on Mattel Creations.

‘Mattel Creations is bringing together two Legends – Hot Wheels and Daniel Arsham, to blur the lines between toys and art by curating a one-of-a-kind collection for our fans,’ says Ted Wu, Vice President and Global Head of Design for Vehicles, Mattel. ‘Over the two-year collaboration, it was a unique design challenge to bring Daniel’s iconic aesthetic to Hot Wheels scale, and the result is something we believe both Arsham and Hot Wheels fans will love.’
